Schakowsky Defends Small Businesses and Seniors Against Ryan Budget Plan

Date:
04/25/2011

On April 22, 2011, Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-9) stood with small business owners and senior citizens in Evanston, IL for a press conference on the impact of  Representative Ryan's deficit proposal that passed the House last week and the proposal offered by President Obama.

“Republican leaders have their priorities upside down.  Their plan ends the guaranteed coverage of Medicare that every worker has paid for” said Charlie Hogan, a retiree.  “It replaces Medicare with limited benefits from a private insurance company.  Their plan would increase premiums and out-of-pocket costs substantially for seniors and the disabled.  And, it would put us at the mercy of insurance companies.”

Last week. Representative Paul Ryan and President Obama released very different proposals on the future of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the Affordable Care Act.  Representative Ryan proposed far reaching solutions that would dramatically reduce the impact of these safety net programs.  At the same time, Senate Minority Leader McConnell stated that ending the Bush Tax Cuts would crush small business and kill jobs, in an attempt to shift the debate from a tax on the wealthiest Americans to a so-called tax on small business.

Efforts to privatize Medicare and defund Medicaid will have a dramatically impact local economies, cost millions of jobs, and leave countless senior citizens and disabled Americans with no safety net.  It is time for Congress to get serious about job creation and economic growth.
