2012 Senator Paul Simon / Senator Paul Wellstone Awards
On Monday evening, April 23, 2012, Citizen Action/Illinois honored champions of the progressive movement at the seventh annual Senator Paul Simon / Senator Paul Wellstone Awards.
Cook County Clerk David Orr was the recipient of the Senator Paul Simon Award. Clerk Orr has been a progressive voice in Chicago politics for over thirty years, and has been nationally commended for his leadership on election reform, the Motor Voter law, early voting, and student election judge programs. He also serves on Citizen Action/Illinois' Policy Council. The award was presented by Alderman Joe Moore, a member of the Citizen Action/Illinois Board of Directors and himself a long-time fighter for progressive values.
Attorney and civil justice Advocate Todd Smith was honored with the Senator Paul Wellstone Award for his tireless advocacy on behalf of working families. Mr. Smith is a founding partner of Power, Rogers & Smith, and has won some of the the largest multi-million dollar jury awards and settlements in serious personal injury, product liability, wrongful death, and malpractice cases in Illinois. The award was presented by attorney Jerry Latherow, also a well-known progressive champion for working-class men and women.
Citizen Action/Illinois was also pleased to host a book signing by Richard Kirsch, author of Fighting for our Health, an inside account of the critical struggle for national healthcare reform. Mr. Kirsch was honored with a special award for his work.
